UCB CREEO-HBCU Program

Building PhD Pathways to the University of California

Led by Principal Investigator Dr. Travis J. Bristol and Co-Investigator Dr. Tolani Britton, and facilitated by UC Berkeley's Center for Research on Expanding Educational Opportunity (CREEO), the UCB CREEO-HBCU Program aims to broaden PhD pathways from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to the University of California, through a summer program in which students explore and engage in research opportunities.

In partnernship with Morehouse College and Talladega College, CREEO is excited to announce a funded 7-week immersive research experience to join the inaugural cohort of HBCU Fellows at UC Berkeley in Summer 2026. This transformative program will welcome 6 students—3 from each HBCU.

The UCB CREEO-HBCU Program is committed to creating meaningful mentorship connections between UC Berkeley Scholars and HBCU Fellows. We are dedicated to exposing HBCU Fellows to graduate education by providing hands-on research experience on critical educational issues that center educators and students of color, personalized mentorship, and support for preparing for PhD programs in education and the sociai sciences. Fellows will also build professional networks and become part of a community of scholars.
