California Department of Education (CDE) launched two key efforts to recruit and retain teachers of color. Assembly Bill 520 proposed $15 million in grants to support local programs focused on diversifying the teacher workforce, with special attention to retaining male teachers of color. Additionally, the CDE formed an Educator Diversity Advisory Group, which gathered insights from educators statewide to shape practical recommendations. These include building local networks, securing sustainable funding, promoting partnerships with colleges and community groups, and raising public awareness about barriers like Proposition 209.
