Current Programs & Projects at CREEO

Explore our diverse range of educational initiatives, each uniquely crafted to enhance teaching and learning experiences. Our programs are spearheaded by Faculty Director Dr. Travis J. Bristol and his team at the Center for Research on Expanding Educational Opportunity (CREEO).

University-Communuity Links - Teachers of Color (TC):

This program, part of UC Berkeley's UC Links network, offers undergraduates a chance to apply classroom theories in real-world settings. They engage in after-school programs in Oakland Unified School District, focusing on the role of race in education, the impact of COVID-19 on teachers of color, and promoting students’ social, emotional, and academic development.

National Board Resource Center (NBRC):

Dedicated to transforming teaching and learning, the NBRC supports teachers in their pursuit of National Board Certification. The program provides comprehensive assistance, from registration to completion, emphasizing equity and justice in classroom practices.

California Black Studies Curriculum (CABSC):

Co-directed by Dr. Travis J. Bristol and Dr. Tolani Britton, this program is developing a California-centric Black studies curriculum. It draws from the groundbreaking work of the state’s reparations task force, aiming to create a cohesive and modular curriculum for educators and students.

Race Education and Community Healing - Network (REACH):

This initiative addresses the disproportionate impact of out-of-school suspensions on marginalized youth. REACH Network, a collaboration between UC Berkeley and UCLA, provides tools and training for healthier school relationships and alternatives to punitive practices.

Oakland Teacher Residency (OTR):

A research study led by Dr. Travis J. Bristol, OTR delves into the experiences of teachers in Oakland Unified School District. It focuses on their preparation, school-based experiences, and the factors influencing their career decisions in education.

The Teaching Well (TTW):

TTW, in partnership with the non-profit of the same name, studies the impact of teacher-wellness focused professional development on educators in Oakland Unified School District. It seeks to understand how these experiences influence teachers' practice and decisions to remain in the profession.
