Research indicates that students of color are less likely to face suspensions when taught by teachers who share their racial or ethnic background. A study analyzing data from New York City public schools between 2007 and 2017 found that Black, Latino, and Asian American students in grades 4-8 experienced reduced suspension rates when assigned to same-race teachers. The effect was most pronounced among Black students, with notable reductions also observed for Latino and Asian American students.
