Yewande Lewis-Fokum is a lecturer at the School of Education, UWI, Mona teaching and researching in the areas of English language and literacy within Creole-speaking environments and conducting workshops in those areas. While at the University of California, Berkeley her host will be Dr. Travis Bristol from the School of Education. Dr. Lewis-Fokum’s current research interests revolve around the provision of in-service teacher training workshops for teachers of English, examining teachers’ beliefs and practices at the early childhood level, and the use of technology to provide individualized and culturally sensitive tutoring to struggling readers. She is also heavily involved with teacher training at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. She received her doctorate from the University of Iowa, her master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and her bachelor’s degree and teaching diploma from the University of the West Indies, Mona campus. Her work has been published in peer reviewed journals such as Changing English and the Journal of Education and Development in the Caribbean.
