CABSC Research

California Black Studies Curriculum Research Project

This qualitative study investigates the California Black Studies Curriculum (CABSC) project. This study intends to learn how participation in the CABSC project shaped the skills, practices, and mindsets of participants.

Research Questions:

  1. To what extent does participation in the CABSC project influence a participant’s pedagogy and practices?

  2. What skills and dispositions do participants acquire as a result of their involvement in the CABSC design project? How do these skills and dispositions evolve over time?

  3. What professional development opportunities are necessary to equip all teachers with the knowledge and skills to teach Black Studies effectively, including addressing sensitive topics like racial bias?

  4. What are the enabling and constraining policies across the state of California that would allow for a successful implementation of a Black Studies curriculum? What policy changes are necessary to mandate the inclusion of Black Studies in public school curriculum at the state or district level?

The findings from this study will illuminate the impact of developing curricula like the CABSC on teachers and will offer valuable insights that can inform the development of future reparations curricula.
